Extra! Extra! - Big EMC News at VMworld
Some big news rolling out today from EMC Ionix at VMworld!!!
Part I
Today we announced a broadened alliance with VMware to help companies accelerate their journey from physical to virtual to cloud infrastructures.
IT organizations today are searching for new ways to more efficiently enable the migration of tier-one applications to VMware vSphere. They are seeking new tools and processes so they can confidently plan the migration, ensure application performance, and operationally monitor and meet service level objectives. Furthermore, having already virtualized tier-two and three applications (the low hanging fruit), customers are now looking to keep a full pipeline of applications to virtualize. The announcement by EMC expands and deepens their relationship with VMware to meet these needs in three specific areas:
- EMC today is announcing a new reseller agreement with VMware. Key to this deal, EMC will become a fully authorized reseller of VMware vCenter AppSpeed. VMware vCenter AppSpeed will be sold in conjunction with EMC’s newly announced Ionix IT management portfolio. The Ionix family of next-generation IT management solutions support customers on their virtualization journey. With EMC Ionix and VMware vCenter AppSpeed, customers will be able to clearly identify root-cause issues across server, network, storage and applications — reducing finger pointing and mean-time-to-identification of performance bottlenecks across the physical and virtual infrastructure.
- EMC and VMware are collaborating to provide market differentiating professional services that will accelerate the migration of tier-one applications to VMware’s Virtual Infrastructure. With a best-in-class automation tools approach, these new services address customer pain points in the following ways: (1) Achieves business owner buy-in by levaeraging VMware vCenter AppSpeed to validate application performance (physical vs. virtual); (2) Leverages EMC Ionix Application Discovery Manager to better understand application types and dependencies to assist in answering the “What to Virtualize Next?”question; (3) Builds on the traditional Virtualization Assessment with VMware’s Capacity Planner. The net result provides customers with a highly executable physical to virtual migration approach, addressing business concerns and application profiling as a key value differentiator.
- EMC and VMware are working together to help customers streamline configuration and compliance management and automate IT processes across the data center. vCenter and EMC Ionix Server Configuration Manager together provide continuous compliance enforcement, helping IT organizations gain consistent and repeatable enterprise-wide audit and compliance visibility. Also, vCenter and EMC Ionix ControlCenter integrate to enable a unified approach to storage resource management in a virtualized data center. Finally, vCenter and EMC Ionix Service Manager work together to provide automated, end-to-end self-service provisioning and CMDB support, bringing ITIL to the virtualized data center.

- Adding FastScale Broadens the EMC Ionix Portfolio
Another big piece of news coming out of VMworld today is that EMC Ionix has added FastScale Technology, Inc. to its solution set with a new acquisition just announced! Three critical points should pop from this move by EMC Ionix:
Maximizes the Value of Private Cloud Architectures
EMC Ionix and FastScale together help maximize the value of private cloud architectures (e.g., VMware vSphere and Cisco UCS). The acquisition of FastScale extends EMC’s powerful Ionix solutions for automating IT management across a unified infrastructure of storage, compute, network and virtualization resources - such as Cisco UCS and EMC Symmetrix V-Max - enabling customers to accelerate their transition from a physical to virtual to private cloud and maximize the value of their new enterprise IT architectures.
FastScale increases the relevance to and alignment with VMware by maximizing the density of VM’s that can be run on an ESX(up to 3X the VMs), decreasing memory and disk usage, and thus enabling the most optimal platform for tier-one application delivery. FastScale provides a differentiated and compelling story for Ionix server management as part of Cisco’s UCS by maximizing the density of VMs you can deploy on a Cisco UCS - enabling the UCS to support higher performance applications, higher multi-tenancy, and denser deployments
Optimizes Application Image Management
By optimizing the application image for virtual environments (stripping out bloat, creating JeOS - JUST ENOUGH OPERATING SYSTEM), you get tremendous benefits that not only solve provisioning problems but are optimized for virtual and cloud infrastructures (that are also relevant for physical too) for:
- Faster and more dynamic provisioning
- Simplified management of software assets
- Greater VM density
- Reduced memory footprint
- Increased performance
- Less exposed vulnerabilities (less OS)
- Build once, deploy anywhere
EMC Ionix - Accelerates the Journey to the Cloud - Even Faster Now
FastScale strengthens the EMC Ionix value proposigion to help customers accelerate the journey to the private cloud. EMC recently extended its leadership position in the virualized data center with the announcement of EMC Ionix - next-generation IT management software helping customers accelerate their migration from physical IT to virtual IT to cloud infrastructures.
The Ionix solution combines automated server compliance and configuration capabilities gained from EMC’s recent Configuresoft acquisition with market-leading, newly unified management software and services to provide unparalleled insight and control across physical and virtual IT environments.
FastScale - when combined with the market-leading configuration compliance intelligence of EMC Ionix Server Configuration Manager (formerly Configuresoft) and EMC Ionix Configuration Analytics Manager will present an unbeatable data center automation, compliance and provisioning solution.
A lot of activity and momentum with EMC Ionix. I’d say “watch this space” for even bigger and better things from EMC Ionix moving forward.
I’d like to know what you think…
